And the Repubs will not be able to help themselves now. They will work themselves into a frothing fit of frenzied rage and speak of nothing else. They will make this election about same sex marriage. And Obama will demolish them. He has provoked them, I believe deliberately.
Yes, it's a gamble. He's gambling he can educate the majority about what is right and what is just and hold the line against hate and intolerance.
Yes, I am claiming this is calculated. He knows how they will respond, how could he not? They will consider this an act of war and they will respond accordingly (see Fox news headline if you have any doubts about this).
They will try to define the election on THIS topic. Obama will oblige and teach the nation about tolerance, equality and justice.

I think Obama deliberately chose this battle knowing full well the Repubs would feel compelled to take the bait and use it to define the election, and I think he's ready to play it out on this field.
